ePUB (electronic publication) is an eBook file format with extension “.epub”. It is technical standard published by IDPF (International Digital Publishing Forum). EPUB is the most popular freely available eBook format supporting various hardware platforms of eBook readers. This format can be downloaded & read with devices like Smartphones, Tablets, Desktop and eReaders.

For Desktop users to read an ePub eBook file, there are many free tools available like: Calibre, EPUB File Reader, Stanza Desktop etc. Android Users can us Google books for this purpose and iPhone Users can use “iBook”. ePub is the most popular format for eBook creation because it is an Open Format and based on HTML. Yes, if you open any ePub eBook with “RAR” or “ZIP” opener like: WinRAR or “7-Zip”, you can easily see its contents. As this is a structured file format, this contains information in “HTML Files”, Images, CSS Style Sheets, MetaData etc.
Earlier, EPUB (Version 2) supports Image format: PNG, JPEG, GIF, SVG but EPUB3 (latest version) which supports HTML5, publications in this format may also contain Video, Audio or other interactivity just like websites in Web Browers.
